Members of Britannia Beach Fire and Rescue and of the Britannia Beach Community Association have been working towards making Britannia Beach a FireSmart community.

Never heard of FireSmart? Here's what they say on their website:

'Preparing for the threat of wildfire is a shared responsibility. From home owners, to industry and  government we all have responsibility to lessen the effects of wildfire. Wildland Urban Interface is a popular term used to describe an area where structures and forested areas meet.

Simply put, Wildland Urban Interface is where the urban lifestyle meets environments that are prone to wildfire. By choosing to extend our lifestyle and communities further into forested areas, we become more exposed to the danger of wildfire.

FireSmart Canada helps you understand the potential of wildfire affecting your home and your community.'

To find out how you can help, and some things you can do right now around your home to make Britannia, Furry Creek and Porteau Cove FireSmart, visit the 'Community Member' section of FireSmart Canada

By working together, we can make our communities safer against the threat of wildfires.

Bursary Award for HSS Graduates

In 2011, members of Britannia Beach Fire and Rescue voted to allocate some of the money we raise from special fundraising events to support one graduate of Howe Sound Secondary each year with a $500 bursary to help with their post-secondary expenses.

This first bursary was awarded in spring 2011 and applications will be accepted through Howe Sound Secondary this and coming years.

General information about the program:

  1. One bursary of $500 will be awarded each year
  2. The bursary will be paid after the student has provided proof of registration at a post-secondary institution
  3. The bursary may be deferred for one year (due to course availability, etc) upon receipt of written request to approval by the BBVFD
  4. The recipient of the bursary will be determined based on both need as well as satisfactory academic achievement

Criteria for applying:

  1. The student must be a resident of Porteau Cove, Furry Creek or Britannia Beach
  2. The student must be actively pursing post-secondary education at a college, university or trade school
  3. The student may either be graduating from grade 12 or already engaged in a post-secondary education program
  4. Students currently attending Howe Sound Secondary should contact the appropriate school counsellor for application details and deadlines
  5. Students already engaged in post-secondary programs may submit their application directly to BBVFD. Request an application at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Community Interaction

In addition to responding to all fire-related 9-1-1 calls, our members are involved in many different community events - and lead several of them.

From the Mother's Day breakfast to the Canada Day fire engine show-and-shine; from Fire Safety Week education to the Hallowe'en bonfire and fireworks; from the annual Fireman's Ball to representing the communities of Britannia Beach, Furry Creek and Porteau Cove at Memorial Day events, the volunteers of Britannia Beach Fire and Rescue cumulatively dedicate thousands of hours to our community each year.

Want to become part of the team? Drop by the firehall any Tuesday evening before practice and find out how you can join us.
